This will be a stall run by Stem Cell Donors Australia in collaboration with WAMSS. With registry eligibility limited to ages 17–35, medical students are an ideal group to engage and Australia has significantly fewer registered donors than Europe, making it harder for Australians requiring a stem cell transplant to find a suitable match. September is World Childhood Cancer Awareness month as well as World Blood Cancer Month and as such this is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of blood cancers as well as to recruit eligible individuals to the donation registry. There will be a short presentation to MD1 students and they will then have the opportunity to join the donor registry, in the form of a buccal (cheek) swab. This is a regular event run by the Stem Cell Donors team and they have trained volunteers who will assist in the collection process.
