ASIA3005 - DEMOCRATISATION IN ASIA
Unit coordinator: Assoc. Prof. David Bourchier (Hong Kong) and Dr Reto Hofmann
Rating: 5/5
Time commitment: 3-8 hours per week
Difficulty: Moderate
Prerequisites: any Level 2 ASIA unit, Level 2 ANTH unit or Level 2 POLS unit
Student comments: "The unit coordinator is so engaged, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about Asian politics and made the content accessible and really interesting. The small class size and obvious care put in by the unit co made it such a phenomenal unit and the perfect area to have some really interesting discussions and learn a hell of a lot. I've never met a unit co who is more passionate and informed about the subject who doesn't also act as if they can never learn any more from the students in their class. David was always so open to our groups ideas and interpretations/understandings of events, and never expected us to simply regurgitate what he'd told us in the lectures. The content is super interesting for anyone interested in politics, Asian cultures and history, or just understanding how nations have shifted along the spectrum from totalitarianism/authoritarianism towards democracy and back, which is super relevant to the time we're living in, even outside of Asia."

Time commitment: 3-4 hours per week
Difficulty: Moderate
Prerequisites: None
Student comments: “It’s fun and makes you more employable. Or you can holiday in a German speaking country!”
“Kati was a wonderful lecturer when I did this unit, it pushed me to do GRMN1402 with Dale, which I thoroughly enjoyed as well.”
“Very good if you want to lead to a short exchange in Germany for 6 weeks!”
"A lot of love and effort went into organising this unit. No lectures, just three highly interactive hours a week with really friendly and highly-skilled teachers. There's many opportunities throughout the semester (both in-class and online) to practise what you've learned and get feedback. In terms of time commitment - if you're looking for a pass, just showing up to class will do; if you're looking to achieve high marks and begin developing German skills for life, so many extra exercises and resources are provided for you to work towards that. The exam is quite fair - it assesses nothing but the basics you learned in class."
"This is the best elective unit out! It is well structured and engaging!"
"If you speak English already, German is the perfect language to pick up. A lot of the grammar rules and even words are the same—compared to other languages I’ve studied, this was by far the easiest to become comfortable enough to speak and write in, and reading is a piece of cake once you’ve learned the vocab. The lecturer/tutors are supportive and very engaging, too. This is probably the best and most cruisy unit I’ve ever taken at UWA!"

LING1001 - LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION
Unit coordinator: Dr Celeste Rodriguez Louro (previously Dr Mitch Browne)
Rating: 5/5
Time commitment: 2-4 hours per week
Difficulty: Easy
Prerequisites: None
Student comments: "A very interesting unit that offers an insight into the broad field of linguistics. It offers many opportunities for you to test your understanding of the concepts and apply them to real-world scenarios: engaging tutorials run weekly, short online tests run once every two weeks. Don't get your anxieties - or hopes - up though, linguistics won't teach you how to speak every language in the world (you WILL however learn, why such a 'cheat code' isn't possible) or give you a massive book on the definitively correct way to speak English (you WILL however explore, what 'correct' means). If you've ever been interested in unpacking the peculiarities of language, definitely jump on board!"

"Yeah this recommendation only applies if you did accounting in year 11 and 12, you’ll absolutely breeze through it. I did none of the tute questions, showed up and did nothing but vibe with the tutor, did this for about 5 weeks before the mid sem, then looked over and revised the couple of new concepts (by the way I didn’t watch the lectures), did the exam. Another 6 weeks later or whatever the end of sem exam came around, the only new concept was a bank reconciliation statement, which is a format that needs to be remember, absolutely no thinking required... finished with an 80-something overall grade. Look I’m not a genius guy and all other scores that sem were in the 70s, so yeah speaks more about the unit than me... IN SAYING THAT, I STUDIED ACCOUNTING IN 11 & 12. This unit is only easy because of that."

Student comments: "Incredibly easy exam, and very manageable HD."
"This unit is a little content-heavy but easily manageable if you put in a reasonable amount of effort. It is really well-designed and absolutely rewarding; it also gives you an insight to the field of study. Personally, it has really stimulated my interest. The lecturers are awesome guys and explain concepts well and won't put you to sleep despite the amount of information in one slide. Overall the lectures are well organised and it's really easy to follow the gist. They also introduce you to their studies and encourage you to contact them if you're interested. There's online tests and lecture-based revision quizzes which would well prepare you for the exam (ALL MCQs!) Absolutely rewarding unit, can't recommend enough!"
