Uni Camp for Kids has run picnics and camps for the socially, emotionally and/or financially disadvantaged children of Perth for the past 87 years. We hold 4 picnics annually (this being the third), with each providing a day of enjoyment for Perth’s most underprivileged children recommended to our program by relevant childcare professionals. The day involves creating a safe space for positive childhood experinces at both a park and pool venue, with various sporting, art, and game-based activities. Our volunteers pride themselves on the ability to come up with unique and fun games that match each of the themes of the Picnic. The fun activity-filled day is provided free of cost to the children, thanks to exhaustive fundraising by our student committee and student volunteers. Picnic also provides the children’s carers and/or families with much needed respite. Furthermore, Picnic provides opportunities for positive role modelling and mentorship to the children in our program, as well as offering our student volunteers a broader worldview.

All our volunteers must have valid Working With Children Checks and submit these to our Vice President prior to picnic. Student volunteers or “leaders” are carefully paired so that at least one experienced leader and one leader with a valid driver’s licence and roadworthy car, is present in every partnership. Every pair is allocated 2-3 children to collect and care for and engage with in their “family” for one day. Each “family” will drive to the park venue for a 10am arrival. The children will be entertained with inflatables, games, craft and sports until midday. Families then leave to arrive at the pool venue by 1:30pm. Between the two venues, families will organise their own lunch. The children are at the pool venue until 3:30pm, when they will prepare to leave and be dropped back to their homes.
