Surgical Skills Night

Provide an interactive learning environment for learning key surgical procedures such as suturing for undergraduate IMSCP and MD1 students. All the skills taught are based off the clinical curriculum of UWA MD program and are intended as a form of early exposure to build confidence for hospital placements.

 - Our event will involve teaching the following procedures:               

1. Suturing -> Each participant will receive a pre-cut (skin lesion) pig trotter to practice suturing the wound with a monofilament suture. They will be using tweezers, scissors and needle holders to insert the needle into the skin, pull it out, tie the suture and cut the suture. All of these steps will be explicitly taught prior to practice and closely supervised by experienced MD3-4.               

2. Xray interpretation -> Will be a presentation in a lecture theatre on what to observe and look for on Xray images. Will most likely have a member from the UWA surgical society as the presenter OR a radiologist affiliated with the club.

 3. Donning/doffing -> Each participant will receive a PPE to learn how to put on themselves. Again, experienced medical students will be supervising the entire process and assisting with teaching.
