About Tangaroa Blue: We can then start to work on solutions to stop the flow of litter at the source. It costs nothing to participate and all materials, volunteer insurance and logistical support is provided. In 2018, more than one thousand people from across the community spent over 2,500 volunteer hours at 120 clean-up events and scoured more than 161 km of coastline.

A total of 58,097 items, weighing in at 5,114 kg, were removed and audited by volunteers. Marine debris is an international problem, but Australians taking action in their local area can lessen the impacts and help to create change. Every piece of rubbish removed from the beach means less opportunity for marine animals to be impacted through ingestion or entanglement. The data that is collected also helps to track litter to its source and create programs to change behaviour and stop rubbish at the source.

Additional requirements

No qualifications or experience required, Tangaroa Blue will provide instructions on how to run the clean-up and collect and submit the data. We also provide a clean-up kit. Anyone that is able to collect debris or sort, count and record the types of debris found can participate and make a positive contribution to protecting our coasts and oceans.
