This event is the second screening of former UWA student Giles Chan's feature-length film "Jellyfish." With the film's production taking over three years from start to finish and $12000 in total production costs, the film premiered at Luna Leederville on the 18th of July to a standing ovation. Set in contemporary Perth, Western Australia, "Jellyfish" is a bleak investigation into the alienation and lonely deppressivity that plagues the life of the lead character, Henry (Aidan Rynne), who makes a living as a literal human punching bag. The film is devastating in it's emptiness, and yet also includes some hilarious dialogue, most of which tends towards the absurdity of the life that many of us live in the working world. Chan pulls Henry's character to the extremes of lonely passivity, a husk in human form, he floats on the momentum of the currents produced by those in close proximity to him. 'Director Chan' blows it out of the water: the herculean task of writing, directing, filming, producing, animating (in parts), scoring and editing the 1hr 55min feature; and Aidan Rynne gives an amazing debut performance, completely encapsulating and becoming the character. The film ultimately is a charming yet depressing, bleak and yet colourful, depiction of the condition of human lonliness in the most isolated city in the world.
It is to be screened at the social sciences lecture theatre, next to the koi pond on the 6th of September.
