This project proposes to conduct a test excavation of an archaeological feature associated with the Gerald Mission site.  The archaeological investigations are part of a larger Shire of York project to develop walking trails along the Avon River. The two archaeological features proposed for investigation are located within 20 m of the east bank of the Avon River. The first of these was initially identified as a well, but doubt exists as the veracity of this claim. There are also some scattered structural remains near the potential well, but these may or may not be in-situ. These features were uncovered during vegetation clearing at the site in 2023 for the purpose of fire risk mitigation. The intention of this archaeological investigation is to confirm the function and dating of these features. It is intended to conduct a test excavation of the “well” feature, and to conduct surface survey to record the spread of structural material. No excavation will be conducted on this latter scatter of material.
