The MSS Music Education Outreach Program is a week-long regional trip where UWA Music students travel to rural towns across Western Australia to deliver engaging music workshops for primary school students—culminating in an end-of-week concert. Visiting schools that sit below the state median of 1000 on the ICSEA (Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage) scale, ensuring that children who may not otherwise have access to music education can experience the joy of learning and performing. The program champions inclusivity and accessibility, providing every child—regardless of their socio-economic background, geographical location, or culture—the opportunity to discover the transformative power of music.
In 2024, the MSS visited schools in Pingelly and Narrogin, and this year we’re expanding to Geraldton to reach five schools including Beechlands, Waggrakine, and Allendale Primary Schools. Interest in the program has nearly tripled since its launch, with 21 passionate volunteers selected for the 2025 trip. Beyond supporting regional students, the program offers MSS members valuable teaching and organisational experience, bridging the gap between university study and real-world community impact. Supported by the UWA Junior Music School, KaBoom Percussion, and Education Council funding, the initiative continues to grow—proving that music truly connects and uplifts us all.
