This Speaker's Union event is a 'public speaking improv and presentation session:
The session will consist of 2 parts: the first 30 minutes is the 'public speaking improv session', in which students will be given table topic questions on the main powerpoint (i.e. what was your most difficult uni assignment and how did you tackle it?). Anyone from the audience can then volunteer to answer a table topic question in front of the audience for 1-2 minutes. Constructive speaking evaluations will then follow.
The 2nd part of the session is the presentation section: any student is allowed to present a powerpoint/speech to the audience along academic lines, i.e. a practice presentation for a unit, a consulting presentation, a postgrad thesis, or an informative academic presentation (e.g. theoretical physics).
The main purpose of this event is to facilitate a platform for students to convey academic topics to a wide audience, as well as to encourage students to improve their public speaking skills and interpersonal confidence in front of an audience.
