Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations

The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) is the peak body representing the interests of Australia’s 320,000+ postgraduate students. CAPA’s memberships include 33 postgraduate associations and the National Indigenous Postgraduate Association Aboriginal Corporation (NIPAAC).

The PSA is a financial member of CAPA, and the UWA PSA President is our representative on the Council. The Council meets at least twice a year, once face to face for the Annual Council Meeting in December and once via teleconference in May.


National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU)

The National Tertiary Education Union represents and provides advocacy for academic, general, research, casual and Guild staff at the University of Western Australia.


UWA Senate

The Senate is the governing authority of the University and consists of 21 members and in the words of The University of Western Australia Act 1911 has “the entire control and management of the affairs of the University and may act in all matters concerning the University in such manner as appears to it best calculated to promote the interests of the University”. The PSA President is the PSA’s UWA Senate representative.


UWA Academic Board and Academic Council

The Academic Board is the chief academic body in the University. It has delegated authority for most of its business to the Academic Council. The Academic Council is the principal executive arm of the Academic Board through which most of the Board’s business is conducted. Its membership comprises ex officio appointments, deans of the faculties and eight members elected by and from the Academic Board. The PSA President is the PSA’s Academic Board and Academic Council representative.


UWA Board of the Graduate Research School

The Board of the Graduate Research School deals with matters relating to postgraduate research, research training and supervision within the University. Considering how important the GRS is to the candidature and funding of Research postgraduates access to this Board is particularly helpful in promoting the interests of postgraduates at UWA.


UWA School-level representation

There are groups, clubs or committees within most schools and departments that help add to the university’s fantastic collegial environment. Get in touch with your PSA faculty representative for more information on your discipline area’s representation groups.
