We offer Guild grants up to $400 to students who are experiencing severe financial difficulties. Grants are intended to support students facing unforeseen and unavoidable expenses that are directly or indirectly related to their studies.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be a currently enrolled student at UWA
- Be a current member of the UWA Student Guild
- Demonstrate severe financial hardship
- Show that you’ve exhausted all other options
- Show that you’re unable to make repayment of a Guild loan
Please note:
Guild Grants cannot be used for:
- Course fees
- Social, sporting, or holiday costs
- Ongoing living expenses (e.g. rent, groceries, bills)
Unpaid Placement Grant (NEW)
The Guild offers an Unpaid Placement Grant (UP Grant) of up to $300 to students who are experiencing financial difficulties resulting from an unpaid placement undertaken as a mandatory part of their course of study. The UP Grant aims to support students whose ability to maintain adequate paid employment is disrupted by the required hours for an unpaid placement, noting that the overall responsibility to ensure that students are remunerated fairly for work undertaken lies with the government.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be a currently enrolled student at UWA
- Be a current member of the UWA Student Guild
- Demonstrate severe financial hardship
- Show that you’ve unable to make repayments of a Guild Loan
- Show that you’re undertaking an unpaid placement as a mandatory part of your studies
- Show that your placement has impacted your ability to maintain adequate paid employment
Please note, the Unpaid Placement Grant cannot be used for:
- Course fees
- Social, sporting, or other extraneous costs
Smartrider Grant (NEW)
In response to increased cost of living pressures on students, the Guild has partnered with UWA to provide funds to students experiencing financial difficulties impacting on their travel to and from UWA. The Smartrider Grant provides $50 onto a students’ Smartrider to enable public transport travel and support students’ basic need to attend university.
Eligibility
You must:
- Be a currently enrolled student at UWA
- Be a current member of the UWA Student Guild
- Use public transport to travel to UWA for your studies
- Demonstrate, via a written statement, how this grant will benefit your ability to attend UWA
Graduation Gown Assistance
Students experiencing financial hardship can now apply for free graduation attire through the Graduation Gown Assistance Program through Student Assist.
This program is open to all UWA students eligible to graduate at the upcoming graduation ceremony.

SOS Grants Scheme
If you need financial help for an emergency to cover expenses related to your education, UWA may be able to provide you with financial assistance through UWA’s SOS Emergency Grant.
