Vice-President (Coursework)

Alexander Tan

Over my time at University I have been involved in multiple facets aside from academics. I have always strived to be active undertaking roles such as public relations officer and sports committee member for the Multicultural Students Union and, currently, student representative under STAR for the guild. Both of these positons, but in particular, being involved with the student guild, and having the opportunity to converse with Nevin Jayawardena, Manpreet Kaur and Owen Myles, has enlightened me about the importance of exceptional student representation to the quality of education and student experience at UWA. Their achievements as student representatives and encouragements has inspired me to push myself as a student representative and ensure that the interests of postgraduate students are strongly represented.

As a fellow postgraduate student and hopefully Vice President of Coursework for the PSA, I want to work towards ensuring that UWA’s higher degrees remain relevant and provide students with the best opportunities in today’s fierce market.

Ensuring Postgraduate student’s experience at the University has always been my intrinsic interest which is evident through my engagement in informal discussions and volunteering with the Guild and UniMentor. I wish to apply for the Vice President position at PSA to assist the President and other executive members in meeting the organization objective where postgraduate students have transparent relationship with the University. I have a strong educational focus on student experience and passion to represent the students’ voice and be advocate of change being a Coursework student myself for 2 years and constantly engaging in coursework feedback and events to better understand the educational vision. I wish to apply for this executive member with organization skills, time management and focus on postgraduate students’ interests. I am prepared to commit and assist to best of my capabilities for this honorable position with the PSA.

Faculty Representative (Coursework) – Engineering & Mathematical Sciences

At the end of this year, I will have spent four years at UWA. Over that time, I have forged many connections with staff and students from the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (EMS). In my role as President of Engineers Without Borders UWA this year, I worked closely with the EMS Faculty on improving student experience and engagement. I believe that I am well networked and connected to successfully fulfil the role of Faculty of EMS Coursework Representative.

If elected to this position, I will seek out a position on the Faculty’s Student Association Council (SAC). The SAC meetings are used as a forum by the Faculty to get feedback from student clubs regarding coursework and student experience. It is also used as an avenue to communicate any upcoming initiatives or changes by the Faculty.

I will work hard to represent the diverse EMS postgraduate students.

Being a Master of Professional Engineering student myself for 2 years now, I understand and am very well exposed to issues and interests within postgraduate students in the EMS Faculty. I possess extensive experience in being the advocate to make the student experience better and more transparent for the bigger picture within the University. With new coursework, postgraduate courses adding in the 2018 year, I am much exposed to the courses and students’ expectations within the University as I also hold a position as Administrative Assistant at the Admissions office in Student Experience at UWA for past 1.5 years. This extensive liaison and volunteering experiences like Logistics Officer for Teach Learn Grow and UniMentor, I believe I have the right skills and background to represent the cohort of all coursework students at the EMS and act purely in their interest and resolve issues responsibly.

I am currently enrolled in my 2nd year of a PhD in Physical Chemistry. My main goals as a prospective 2018 PSA President is to work quickly to build a team across all Faculties and Schools and ensure that communication channels to student representatives are continually open. I wish to work with the Guild events team to grow staples of the PSA like Connect, our quiz night, cocktail party and Postgrad café while introducing a few new events to showcase UWA and the Perth area, especially to postgrads visiting Australia from abroad. I have a passion for student representation having served as the Postgrad Rep, President and Past President for CHeMnBiO (2015-2017), Education Vice President of Science Union (2017) as well as PSA Secretary (2017). It would be an honour to serve as the 2018 PSA President and continue to build on the hard work of Owen the 2017 committee.

International Students’ Officer

Rahul Kumar

 Rahul Manampurathu Suresh Kumar

I am Rahul, Master of Professional engineering.

I have applied to become an International student officer because I am keen to get involved with the university, meet new people, and improve my knowledge about international cultures. As an International student I know what an international interested in.  It’s great having this opportunity to work with so many different people, working with other PSA members, working with students and university staff. I will also learn a lot about how the university functions, working in many different areas within the university. I have following personal qualities: Desire to learn, Enthusiasm, Leadership, Responsibility, Dependability, Maturity, Initiative, Dedication and Punctuality. All these qualities will make me a good International Student Officer and confident that PSA and University objective will be met through team work. If I am elected as the International Student Officer I will make sure to organise events for International Postgraduate students.

Media Officer

Laura Skates

Hi, I’m Laura! This year I was your Off-Campus Officer, and really enjoyed working with the PSA committee, assisting with events, and helping to edit and layout the PostScript magazine. I’d really like to contribute to the PSA again next year as your Media Officer. I have some design and photography skills (having won poster & presentation awards for this), and would love to help capture events, create advertising materials, and work on the next PostScript magazine. I’d also like to foster a positive #uwapostgrad community online, and I have plenty of prior experience with social media to help with this (regularly contributing to “Science is Amazing” and “UWA School of Biological Sciences” on Facebook, “@kingspark_wa” and “@floraskates” on Twitter, “@floraskates” and “@funwithplantz” on Instagram). Overall, I am passionate about communication, and would love to work with the PSA to keep all postgrads informed, engaged, and connected! J

I am part-time in the School of Music (Masters-Musicology- 3rd year), usually in Reid or the Music Library. I am doing ground-breaking research on the turn of the century Italian composer, GianFrancesco Malipiero, not even known to the Italians. I leapt at the challenge of the 3MT competition again this year, and had a memory melt-down (Nutribullet remember?) I am sociable and love helping out. I was very active in my undergraduate years and worked with the Staff liaison officer to make student life happier. The quality of the academic and social experience of the students is important to me, as is our mental and spiritual peace of mind. Having two years’ experience to bring to the position, this coming year, I would like to focus on consolidating school postgrad reps (thanks to those who have stood forward to do this so far-this is so great), arriving at an effective sessional tutorial/ teaching training program for FABLE Faculty, and improve prices(!), types and quantity (pasta al dente, per favore) at food outlets at UWA.
